Microsoft takes charge.

Word is coming down the pipe that FEMA has selected Microsoft to be in charge of the official effort to collect contact and status information for Hurricane Katrina survivors. You will probably see headlines over the next few days about how Microsoft and FEMA are stepping in to save the day with a proprietary Windows-branded, Excel-based solution. You will probably not see headlines about how this has obliterated our community-based project based on open code and open standards.

I am very sorry. It is out of my hands.

Update: See also this report that the FEMA site for requesting help requires Internet Explorer 6. I just tried it. If i go to the FEMA site and try to register, it takes me to this page to complain about my browser.
