A classic case of overengineering.

Joe Hall points at a Berkeley Mechanical Engineering project to automate the raising and lowering of a toilet seat to resolve age-old conflicts between men and women about who should lower the seat.

Hours and hours of calculations? Two pedals? Automatic raising and lowering? Sounds much too complicated to me. Joe got it right: this is really a very simple problem. Just extend the flushing lever with a piece that sticks out toward the toilet seat. When you push down the lever, the lever pushes the seat away so it falls down. Wouldn't that do the trick?
