In the time-wasting hacks department...
It occurred to me this evening that the 32x32 iChat icon might be an interesting place to put a really tiny bit of information visualization. You could have a little clock to show the local time in your time zone, or a mood icon in one corner, or a colour-coded ring to indicate what you've been doing recently, or a sparkline of some meaningful parameter.

For now it's a little bar indicating the history of my iChat status over the last hour. And just for fun the image is rotated like the hour hand of a clock, so i tumble slowly twice in a day.

have you seen iPulse? It's a snazzy OS X app that gives you various pieces of information in a neat little blob (it's highly customizable so mine is different than many):

Yep. It looks neat, if a bit inscrutable. I guess you must get used to knowing what all the dots and colours mean after having one for a while.

It would be kind of cool if a reasonable number of iChat users all started using their icons to report some useful information in a consistent manner.

I've just noticed that my Trillian directory now has a megabyte of tiny Ping pictures, at 400 different orientations! I wonder if it ever purges its cache.

Anyway, it makes an amusing collage...
